Could Goldberg actually beat Gunther?
What if the unimaginable happened at Saturday Night's Main Event?
For almost a year, it had been rumored that Goldberg would have a retirement match in 2025. Along with that speculation has run rampant that the former WCW and WWE Champion would face Gunther.
This past Monday on RAW it was confirmed that the Hall of Famer would face the current WWE World Heavyweight Champion at the latest edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event in Atlanta, Georgia.
Surprisingly this match has been confirmed as a championship match, with very little build. Gunther has just recaptured the championship that he lost at Wrestlemania, and his first defense will be against Goldberg,
Obviously most fans are already blowing this off as a win for the Ring General, as many are assuming that this will be Goldberg’s final match. But what if he wins?
It’s possible we may be a promo from Goldberg on the June 23rd edition of RAW, clarifying if this is his retirement match.
Goldberg did have two shocking championship wins in 2017 against Kevin Owens and 2020 against Bray Wyatt, both being short lived championship runs. This one is different as Goldberg has not wrestled in a WWE ring since 2022
What if Goldberg actually defeats Gunther?
Goldberg shocks the world and defeats the two time WWE Champion, in his first title defense. First of all, this will be a horrible look on Gunther, since he just lost two months ago to Jey Uso and has just won the championship back.
What good could come of a Goldberg championship run in 2025?
An immediate cash in from Seth Rollins. Yes this is the obvious, as Gunther mentioned Mr. MITB on the same night as Goldberg’s return. But would this be the way the Hall of Famer would want to go out, with a 5 minute championship reign?
Could we get a return match between Gunther and Goldberg at Summerslam? Being a two night show this could be a possibility, making it very easy for a women’s championship to main event night 1. Gunther wins and becomes a 3 time Champion.
This would be incumbent on either Cody Rhodes or Randy Orton winning King of the Ring, as either would most likely face John Cena.
Rollins cashing in on Goldberg, would garner massive heel heat for the Architect, but would it diminish this MiTB win? Certainly possibly. Wouldn’t it be “better” if he cashed in on a strong champion?
What if Rollins repeats what he did at Wrestlemania 31 and made the rematch a triple threat and pulls off a repeat of the heist of the century? This would be an incredible moment, but should be reserved for a night 1 main event.
But what will really happen? Gunther makes Goldberg pass out from the sleeper, then he officially retires the following Monday Night on RAW. Rollins will cash in futher down the road…most likely not against Gunther. Goldberg will ride off into the sunset after giving one last final valiant battle
What do you think will happen?
Also, awesome piece!
Allow me to channel my inner Bret Hart… If Bill Goldberg wins, we riot! Just kidding, maybe. Nobody wants this. Nobody wants to see him botch his way through a championship match. I’d like to bet that even those nostalgic for WCW era wrestlers would rather see a Booker T spinarooni for 5 seconds than watch a 5 minute Bill Goldberg squash match. And that’s as long as it could be. I love Gunther, but I don’t think the Ring General can carry Bill Goldberg through a 10-15-20 minute banger of a match. Bill Goldberg needs to stay retired, and not be a 4 week detour just so some Legend can pretend to be a “hero”. Bill Goldberg, you know who’s next after this? Nobody. Gunther needs to send Bill Goldberg to pasture to join the likes of Virgil on the convention circuit. Screw you, Bill Goldberg. End rant.
